I. Introduction

Purpose of Policy: The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies within Leafville Ohio High School. Generative AI has the potential to enhance educational experiences by providing innovative tools for learning, creativity, and problem-solving. However, AI presents challenges related to privacy, bias, and academic integrity that must be addressed to ensure a positive and equitable learning environment for all students.

Scope: This policy applies to all students, teachers, and administrative staff at Leafville Ohio High School. This policy applies to any coursework given for in-class or out-of-class activities like homework. 

II. Definitions

Generative AI: Any AI technologies able to produce original content, such as texts, images, and etc… 

Key Terms: Additional terms used within this policy include academic integrity, referring to the ethical standards of scholarship, and bias, which refers to systematic errors or prejudices in AI-generated content.

III. Ethical Principles

Integrity and Honesty: students are expected to maintain academic honesty when using generative AI tools, properly citing sources and acknowledging the use of AI-generated content.

Equity and Accessibility: the school will strive to ensure equitable access to AI tools for all students, addressing potential biases in AI-generated content and providing support for students with diverse learning needs.

Privacy and Security: Both students’ and educators’ data collected or processed by AI tools will be protected in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), safeguarding the privacy and confidentiality of personal information.

IV. Guidelines for Use

Education Use Cases: Generative AI may be used to support learning objectives, such as transcribing data, creating visuals, etc.. 

Prohibited Uses: Generative AI may be prohibited at the use of academic dishonesty when using AI and at the results of each invidious teacher with each assignment. 

Collaboration and Sharing: Students and teachers may share AI-generated work within the school environment for educational purposes, but must clearly distinguish between AI-assisted and original work. Sharing between classmates may lead to academic dishonesty. 

V. Responsibilities 

Students: Responsible for using generative AI tools ethically and responsibly, adhering to academic integrity standards, and acknowledging the use of AI-generated content.

Teachers and Staff: Responsible for guiding, monitoring, and evaluating the use of generative AI in educational activities, providing support and resources to ensure ethical and effective integration into the curriculum.

Administration: Responsible for providing support, resources, and training for the ethical use of AI.

VI. Monitoring and Compliance 

Monitoring Use: the school will monitor the use of generative AI tools to ensure compliance with the policy and address any misuse or breaches.

Handling Violations: Procedures for addressing violations of the policy will be fair, transparent, and consistent, with consequences appropriate to the severity of the violation.

VII. Support and Resources

Training and Education: Leafville Ohio High School will offer training sessions and educational materials on the ethical use of AI and the interpretation of AI-generated content, utilizing available resources effectively.

Technical Support: Students and staff will have access to technical support services to address any issues or questions related to AI tools and technologies.

VIII. Review and Update

Policy Review Schedule: The policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its relevance and effectiveness in light of evolving AI technologies and educational practices.

Feedback Mechanism: Students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to provide feedback on the policy through designated channels, allowing for continuous improvement and stakeholder engagement.
